If you have children, you’ve likely had a battle on your hands at some point when it comes to trying to get them to eat healthy food. I’ve long thought that Jamie Oliver’s fix of sneaking three servings of vegetables into his Hidden Vegetable Pasta Sauce was a clever, if not downright sneaky way to get the kiddies to eat their vegetables.
As I cranked out a ride in the rain on the very last day of 360’s recent Bike To Work Month contest, I couldn’t help but feel a smile come to my road grime-encrusted face: the prizing and handy tools from Smart Commute had tricked fifteen of us into eating our metaphorical veggies. While our little group, the 360 Rollerz were having a great time competing, supporting, and occasionally razzing each other over our contest, we were also getting outdoors (some of us every day!), getting some exercise, and socializing.
We had snuck in some self-care under the radar, cleverly disguised as fun.
According to a 2011 study on Pub Med, only 6.6% of adults 25 or older (from a survey size of 64,310 respondents) say they engage in some form of self-care activity each day and I can’t help but think that a newer survey would likely reveal an even lower number in 2017. Just like how your mom (hopefully!) told you to eat your veggies growing up, remember too the safety demonstration given by flight attendants: In the event of the oxygen masks dropping down, you are supposed to put your own mask on first and then attend to the needs of those needing assistance nearby. If you don’t take care of yourself, you diminish your ability to attend to other important matters such as your work, your family, and your community.
Perhaps too many people believe that they need to have an all-or-nothing approach? Turns out it’s really cool to just find a way to have some fun with some like-minded people. Something with a healthy dose of movement, community and, most importantly, fun.
Check out team 360’s results from our first-ever Bike To Work Month contest. We had so much fun, we’re keeping the contest rolling into July and beyond.
