1. Why did you join the technology industry?
I didn’t mean to… I was working in the marketing department for a document management company and the CEO at the time declared that he would not promote me any further until I invested the time working in IT.
He strongly believed to be a successful marketer, I needed to garner a realistic understanding of our target group by immersing myself in the day-to-day challenges and opportunities of the IT department. It was love at first byte.
2. Who is the person who has inspired you professionally?
Betty Oliphant, the Grande Dame of Canadian Ballet. “Miss O” was the founding principal and Head Mistress of The National Ballet of Canada when I attended. She was an elegant figure, a pioneer, a driven entrepreneur with a strict commitment to success and a deep passion for dance. Miss Oliphant has inspired my strong work ethic, attention to detail and colouring outside the lines approach to marketing.
3. If you could give one piece of advice to your 13-year-old self what would it be?
Patience, dear heart. #patience
4. How do you think we can encourage more women in tech?
We need to reframe how roles in technology are viewed by young women. Tech is fast-paced, sexy, and everywhere. I believe the media can help us better convey technology in ways that are more accessible and inspiring to younger women. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter are all around us; platforms and applications that girls engage with on an hourly basis. Technology is literally right there at their fingertips – who better to shape its future?
5. What is the best part of your job?
The people. It truly is all about the people we work with, the people we support and the people we serve. Delivering elegant digital engagements that are simple, and “just work” (so well, in fact, the user isn’t even aware of it) is like magic to me. Digital magic.
