Current Organization: VarageSale
1. Why did you join the technology industry?
To be honest, I never planned to join the tech industry. I went to school for graphic design and when I graduated in 2008, UX/UI designers barely existed. My career in tech began with a mobile designer job at a software development company. I didn’t know much about mobile app design at the time, but I’ve been in love with UI, UX and product development ever since. Product design became my passion.
2. Who is the person who has inspired you professionally?
It was Don Norman, author of ‘The Design of Everyday Things’. Norman’s perspectives on design, usability engineering, and cognitive science opened up my mind. After learning from him, my understanding of how real people interact with design and computers was raised to another level.
3. If you could give one piece of advice to your 13-year-old self what would it be?
I would tell my 13-year-old self: You are stronger than you think. Never underestimate yourself, but also never underestimate others. If you think you are not good enough for something, go learn, practise, and try to be better. Don’t waste your time waiting.
4. How do you think we can encourage more women in tech?
As women, we face challenges in every aspect of life already. But that cannot be an excuse. If the tech industry is where you want to make a difference, you have to work harder and smarter, there are no shortcuts or tricks I can offer. Sometimes those disadvantages can bring out the best in you.
5. What is the best part of your job?
Technology enables so many possibilities, but solving problems for real users along with a team of talented people is the best part. It makes me happy to know I’m designing applications that will make everyday life easier for thousands of people.
